It is hardly surprising that this musical won six Tony awards, including best musical, as it is an uplifting performance on stage, taking you back to the roaring 20’s, amidst the glamour of New York. Millie, played by Coronation Street’s Hayley Tamaddon, is a small town girl trying to make it big in the city.
Hayley as Millie is clumsy and larger than life, Lisa Bridge as Millie’s best friend Miss Dorothy Brown is excellent on stage and performs both gracefully and comically. Michael Colbourne as Jimmy Smith is the star of the show for me from his appearance at the beginning all the way to ‘I’m Falling in Love With Someone’ and the finale.
The singing ability of Hayley Tamaddon stands out and Richard Meek whose performance of ‘The Speed Test’ is impressive deserves praise. In fact, most of the musical numbers deserve a mention with songs such as ‘Gimme Gimme’ and ‘Forget About the Boy’,
This musical relies very much on audience reaction, the songs are lively the dances energetic. The natural chemistry between the cast helps make the light hearted moments work resulting in plenty of laughter .The outfits look suitable glamourous and the set sparkles in its Art Deco splendour. Musical director Chris Peake leads a live band that add energy to the dance routines.
