Cole Porter’s classic screwball nautical farce is pure escapism. Silly and cleverly subversive. The show is feelgood unlimited with tunes to match. Show stopping classics from the opening “I Get a Kick Out of You” onwards.
A show full of energy and wit, with additional Porter songs “Friendship” and “It’s De-Lovely” and of course the title song, which ends the first act and showcases the outstanding talent of Debbie Kurup who plays Reno Sweeney.
All the performances are outstanding . The plot revolves around young Billy Crocker ( Matt Rawle), stowing away on a transatlantic voyage to pursue his beloved Hope Harcourt, but the star performance belongs to showgirl Reno Sweeney previously mentioned. When Billy takes refuge with fugitive gangster Moonface Martin played by Hugh Sachs who trips through his succession of strong arm schemes with grace. Even Stephen Matthews’ English lord has his moments, with his number, “The Gypsy In Me”. This alone brought enough smiles to faces to justify buying a ticket
Everyone should enjoy this comedy complete with tap dancing sailors, eccentric passengers and magnificent songs. I certainly got a big kick out of the show.
