This eagerly awaited musical version of the 1992 film which starred Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston starts with a real bang. The pyrotechnics quite literally warm you up and ensure that you are ready for the action ahead. Nearly everyone knows the story of pop mega star Rachel Marron whose life is threatened by an unknown stalker. Stuart Reid is impressive as Frank Farmer, the former Secret Service agent hired as her bodyguard who fears a conflict of interest when he falls in love with his boss, though the scene where he takes her to a club, incognito, and appears to put her at risk by encouraging her to get up and sing probably does nothing to keep her identity secret!
This element of danger seems secondary to the many wonderful songs in this show. I Will Always Love You, ensures a great ending. Zoe Birkett as Rachel is outstanding. in fact the whole cast are brilliant.
The sets are excellent and the audience on their feet join the cast in a joyous rendition of I Wanna Dance With Somebody. The performance was so absorbing, that I couldn’t believe how quickly the time passed.
The show runs until May 30th but I suggest if you want to see it, that you book quickly because if the capacity audience who witnessed the show on Wednesday tell others how enjoyable it is, then you’ll struggle to get a seat.
